Vara de Rey
Vara de Rey is a monument located close to the main port of Ibiza, in the heart of the city. It is dedicated to a Ibizan Joaquin Vara de Rey y Rubio, born in 1841. He died fighting against the American army in the Battle of El Caney, during the independence war of Cuba in 1898.
As described by a Cuban journalist, after seeing the death of his brother and cousin, despite being terribly wounded he kept rising from the ground, encouraging his troupe on in the name of Spain until he died. There are other monuments in his honour in both Madrid and Barcelona.
The monument was built thanks to the donations of the Spanish people who wished to honour their hero in his native land. The relatives of the general and the King Alfonso XIII attended the statues inauguration in 1904.
