Fuente de Cuba, Madrid Spain
The Fuente de Cuba is a monument located in the Retiro park in Madrid, Spain. It stands in tribute to the Peoples Republic of Cuba and consists of three main parts. The bottom part is divided on either side by the two ends of a boat and has large lizards and turtles placed around 4 pools. Just above this the middle part has the Republic of Cuba’s coat of Arms, flanked by Isabella I and Christopher Columbus on either side. On the top stands the personification of Lady Cuba, next to a child holding a large horn filled with fruit.
The monument took 20 years to complete due to various circumstances. The Madrid City Council approved the erection of a monument in homage to Cuba in 1929. The director of the works was Mariano Benlliure , who had the help of Miguel Blay , Francisco Asorey and Juan Cristóbal for the sculptural of the elements. The work took place between 1929 and 1930. The original project included a bronze sculpture of Cuban President Gerardo Machado, but due to the delays in the monument’s inauguration, it was never added.
